The Research Training Group imparts subject knowledge, core academic skills and transferable skills that boost your competitiveness beyond your occupational sphere, supporting you in your personal development as you progress towards a leadership role.
Our aim is to make your career start in academia a smooth one by identifying measures to integrate you into the labour market and helping you manage the transition to a career in academia.
Gaining additional, transferable skills is a fixed part of the syllabus and is intended to make sure you hit the ground running in the next stage of your career. The training scheme covers the following areas:
- research skills
- non-subject-related skills
- methodological/technical skills
- teaching skills in a higher-education context
- additional qualifications related to a specific occupational area
- career planning and transition
As a bare minimum you will need to attend two courses from area 1 (one of which must be concerned with teaching good academic practice), two courses from area 2, one from areas 4 or 5 and one from area 6 (career transition and planning).
This equates to six courses attended throughout the six semesters of doctoral study. Transferable skills training is part of the syllabus and is written into the qualification agreement.
